A book by Mrs Alfred Sidgwick and Mrs Paynter, The Children’s Book of Gardening with 12 full page illustrations by Mrs Cayley-Robinson. It was originally published in 1909, however this is a re-print edition from 1913.
This books sets out to teach children how to be successful gardeners. The chapters include: The Situation and Soil, Annuals, Hardy Perennials, Bedding Plants, Rock and Wall Gardens, Difficult and Shady Gardens, Fruit and Vegetables, A Calendar of Work and much more. The book contains beautiful colour plates by Winifred Cayley-Robinson. It is a wonderful book to teach children (or adults!) about Gardening. I enjoyed it mostly for the illustrations though as I am not much of a gardener.
There are cheaper versions of The Children’s Book of Gardening available if you cannot afford this vintage copy, which I will be returning to the owner once I have marvelled at it some more. I really like this new edition published by Pook Press Ltd. Pook Press are working to republish classic works in affordable, high quality, colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children.
